Manufacturing: Vietnam plastics exports up 3.04 percent in May

Vietnam’s exports of plastics reached US$200.29 million in May 2025, according to figures released by Vietnam’s General Department of Customs. This represents an increase of 3.04 percent compared to April, bringing the year-to-date (YTD) export value to US$989.05 million.

Top Markets and Notable Increases:

  • Poland experienced an astounding surge of 197.75 percent, reaching US$15.77 million. This makes it a significant contributor to the overall growth.
  • Italy also showed remarkable growth, with exports increasing by 32.26 percent to US$19.03 million.
  • Japan saw a healthy increase of 16.69 percent to US$19.11 million.
  • Cambodia exports jumped by 63.69 percent.
  • Nigeria recorded a strong 23.07 percent increase.
  • Hong Kong, Myanmar, Singapore, and South Africa also reported positive month-on-month growth.
  • The “Other” category saw a 4.76 percent increase.

Significant Declines:

  • Indonesia experienced a sharp decrease of 22.57 percent.
  • China exports fell by 13.71 percent.
  • India saw a substantial drop of 30.48 percent.
  • Lithuania plummeted by nearly 50 percent.
  • Romania and Ivory Coast both experienced drastic decreases of over 78 percent.
  • Other notable declines were observed in Thailand, Portugal, Malaysia, Taiwan, South Korea, Bangladesh, Australia, Canada, and Peru.

The May data for Vietnam’s plastics exports indicates a positive overall trend, primarily fueled by massive increases in exports to Poland and Italy, as well as solid growth in Japan and several African and Southeast Asian markets. However, significant declines in key Asian markets like Indonesia, China, and India suggest a shifting demand landscape and potential challenges in those regions.
