Vietnam welcomed 19,535 tourists from Laos in December, marking a significant increase of 10,105 visitors compared to November, equivalent to a 107.16 percent month-on-month growth, according to Vietnam’s General Department of Tourism. In 2024, Lao arrivals reached 148,655, reflecting a 23.3 percent year-on-year increase.
Lao tourists are primarily attracted to Vietnam’s cultural and natural attractions, with destinations like Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and the Mekong Delta being popular choices. Additionally, Da Nang and Nha Trang appeal to Lao visitors seeking beachside relaxation and leisure activities. Short trips for shopping and cross-border travel are also frequent, supported by the shared border and ease of entry.
Cultural and religious landmarks, such as pagodas and temples, remain key interests for Lao visitors. Many also visit Vietnam for business purposes or family vacations, benefiting from the proximity and affordability of travel between the two countries.
Cross-border bus services and improved road infrastructure have played a significant role in boosting tourist numbers. Direct flights between Vietnam and Laos, operated by airlines like Vietnam Airlines and Lao Airlines, further enhance connectivity between key cities such as Vientiane, Hanoi, and Ho Chi Minh City.
The sharp growth in December reflects seasonal travel trends and the strengthening of cultural and economic ties between Vietnam and Laos. With targeted campaigns and improved travel options, the number of Lao visitors is expected to continue growing.
