Iron & steel: Vietnam imports up 5.71 percent in April, China remains top supplier

Vietnam’s imports of iron and steel reached US$962.88 million in April 2025, according to figures released by Vietnam’s General Department of Customs. This represents a 5.71 percent increase compared to the import value in March, with a year-to-date import value of US$3.61 billion for this category.

China continues to be the dominant iron and steel supplier:

China remained the leading supplier in April, with imports valued at US$466.32 million. This marks a slight 0.81 percent increase from March and accounts for a dominant 51.92 percent of the total year-to-date imports.

Japan sees a significant increase to become a major supplier:

Japan experienced a substantial 27.31 percent increase in iron and steel exports to Vietnam in April, reaching US$156.75 million. Japan now accounts for 14.68 percent of the year-to-date imports.

Indonesia remains a key supplier despite a slight decrease:

Indonesia was the third-largest supplier in April, with imports valued at US$142.76 million, a decrease of 2.18 percent from the previous month. Indonesia accounts for 14.26 percent of the year-to-date imports.

South Korea records a moderate increase:

Imports from South Korea saw a 6.59 percent increase in April, reaching US$110.20 million, contributing 11.01 percent to the year-to-date total.

Significant month-on-month increases and decreases:

Spain experienced the largest month-on-month increase at 427.68 percent, although its overall import value is lower. Australia and the Philippines also saw substantial rises. Conversely, Austria experienced the most significant decrease at 94.72 percent, followed by Finland at 61.56 percent and Mexico at 65.76 percent. Imports from Brazil, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore ceased entirely in April.
