Vietnam’s industrial production index (IIP) surged by 10 percent year-on-year in the third quarter of 2025, marking the fastest pace since 2020, according to data from the National Statistics Office (NSO) → view source.
The jump was driven by enterprises ramping up production ahead of higher U.S. tariffs, a rebound in mining, and stronger electricity generation, the NSO says.
The processing and manufacturing sector expanded 10.2 percent, the mining industry 8.2 percent, electricity production and distribution 9.8 percent, and water supply and waste treatment 5.3 percent.
For the first nine months of 2025, industrial output rose 9.1 percent year-on-year, compared with 8.4 percent in the same period last year.
The processing and manufacturing industry led with a 10.4 percent gain, contributing 8.4 percentage points to overall growth — its biggest jump since 2020.
By sector, the electricity production and distribution industry increased 6.1 percent, the water supply and waste treatment sector 8.8 percent, and mining 0.1 percent.
Several key industries recorded strong double-digit growth.
Motor vehicle manufacturing jumped 26 percent, rubber and plastic products 17.3 percent, non-metallic minerals 15.6 percent, garments 13.5 percent, metal products 12.7 percent, and food processing 10.6 percent.
Only a few sectors lagged: beverage output rose just 3.8 percent, while crude oil and natural gas extraction fell 4.7 percent.
Among major industrial products, car production surged 52.7 percent in the first nine months of 2025, televisions rose 21.8 percent, and NPK fertiliser output climbed 15.9 percent.
Cement rose 15.3 percent, while crude oil and synthetic fibre production slipped slightly.
The consumption index for the processing and manufacturing sector rose 9.1 percent in the first nine months, while inventories climbed 13.3 percent year-on-year as of 30 September.
The sector’s average inventory ratio stood at 82.3 percent, up from 76.8 percent a year earlier.
Employment in industrial enterprises also improved.
As of 1 September, the number of workers increased 4.5 percent year-on-year, led by foreign-invested firms, which expanded staffing by 5.2 percent.
Employment in processing and manufacturing rose 4.7 percent, and in electricity and water supply industries by 4.7 and 1.5 percent respectively.
