Health and social assistance sector in Vietnam records US$0.19 million in January FDI

In January, Vietnam’s health and social assistance activities sector registered a total of US$190,000 in new foreign direct investment (FDI), according to data from Vietnam’s Ministry of Planning and Investment. This represents a decrease of US$200,000 compared to December, which saw US$300,000 in registered capital.

The sector accounted for less than 1 percent of total FDI in January about the same as in December.

Vietnam’s health and social assistance sector has been undergoing significant transformation as the country addresses increasing healthcare needs driven by urbanisation, an ageing population, and rising incomes. In recent years there have been substantial investments in hospitals, medical infrastructure, and healthcare facilities, particularly in urban areas like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. At the same time, the demand for healthcare professionals has risen, with the country focusing on improving medical education, training, and professional standards to meet the needs of a growing population.

The social assistance aspect of the sector is equally important, with government programs aimed at supporting vulnerable groups, including the elderly, people with disabilities, and low-income families. These services include welfare programs, poverty reduction initiatives, and support for rural areas, where access to health services may still be limited.

Despite advancements, the sector faces challenges such as unequal access to healthcare between urban and rural regions, an overburdened public healthcare system, and the need for more skilled workers in the healthcare sector. The government is focusing on expanding health insurance coverage, improving healthcare quality, and investing in digital health solutions to improve service delivery. As the country continues to develop economically, the health and social assistance sector will be crucial in ensuring social welfare and improving the quality of life for all citizens.
