German tourist arrivals to Vietnam decline by 19.82 percent in December but show strong year-on-year growth

Vietnam welcomed 23,468 tourists from Germany in December, a decrease of 5,802 visitors compared to November, reflecting a month-on-month decline of 19.82 percent, according to Vietnam’s General Department of Tourism. However, the total for 2024 reached 249,517 arrivals, marking a solid 24.5 percent increase compared to the previous year.

German tourists are attracted to Vietnam’s cultural and natural diversity. Popular destinations include Hanoi, with its blend of historic charm and bustling city life, Hoi An’s UNESCO World Heritage sites, and the natural splendour of Halong Bay. Beach locations such as Phu Quoc and Da Nang also appeal to German travellers seeking relaxation and warm weather.

German visitors often favour immersive travel experiences, including trekking in Sapa, exploring rural villages, and engaging in eco-tourism activities. Culinary tourism is also a significant draw, with German tourists enjoying Vietnamese dishes like pho, banh xeo, and fresh seafood.

Direct flights between Germany and Vietnam, operated by Vietnam Airlines and Lufthansa, along with connecting flights via hubs like Doha and Dubai, provide convenient travel options for German tourists. The December decline may be attributed to seasonal travel patterns and competition from other winter holiday destinations.

Despite the drop in December, Germany remains a key European market for Vietnam’s tourism, and continued promotional efforts, coupled with Vietnam’s appeal as a long-haul destination, are expected to sustain growth in this segment.
