Garments & textiles: Vietnam fabric imports up 2.35 percent in May

Vietnam’s imports of fabrics reached US$1.45 billion in May 2025, according to figures released by Vietnam’s General Department of Customs. This represents a modest increase of 2.35 percent compared to April, bringing the year-to-date (YTD) import value to US$6.32 billion.

China continues to dominate, holding nearly 70 percent of the market:

China remained the overwhelming primary source for fabric imports, with a May value of US$1.02 billion. This figure remained almost flat (a minor decrease of 0.02 percent) from April, but China still accounts for a staggering 68.56 percent of the total year-to-date imports.

Taiwan and South Korea show steady growth as key regional suppliers:

Imports from Taiwan increased by 3.38 percent to US$137.35 million in May, and South Korea’s imports grew by 3.74 percent to US$125.69 million. These countries continue to be significant regional suppliers, accounting for 10.63 percent and 9.22 percent of YTD imports, respectively.

Japan and several other markets show notable increases:

  • Japan saw a strong increase of 13.02 percent, reaching US$68.13 million.
  • The “Other” category saw a remarkable surge of 95.88 percent, indicating a broader diversification of smaller-scale suppliers.
  • Indonesia imports nearly doubled with a 94.40 percent increase.
  • UK imports surged by 180.60 percent, albeit from a low base.
  • Bangladesh saw a significant increase of 55.40 percent.
  • Malaysia and India also recorded strong growth of 31.84 percent and 21.74 percent, respectively.

Significant decreases in imports:

Conversely, some markets faced substantial declines in imports in May:

  • Hong Kong saw a sharp drop of 53.20 percent.
  • Belgium imports decreased by 50.23 percent.
  • Germany fell by 20.29 percent.
  • Philippines and Singapore recorded no imports in May after having imports in April.

The overall modest increase in May’s fabric imports reflects a stable demand, heavily reliant on China, while other suppliers show dynamic shifts and diversification within the global supply chain.
