Garments & textiles: Vietnam cotton imports dip 4.75 percent in May

Vietnam’s imports of cotton reached US$276.46 million in May 2025, according to figures released by Vietnam’s General Department of Customs. This represents a decrease of 4.75 percent compared to April, bringing the year-to-date (YTD) import value to US$1.35 billion.

USA remains the top supplier with moderate growth:

The USA continued to be the primary source for cotton imports, with a May value of US$177.01 million. This signifies a moderate increase of 4.51 percent from April and maintains its leading position in year-to-date imports.

Brazil experiences a significant decline:

Imports from Brazil, a major supplier, experienced a substantial decrease of 25.99 percent in May, falling to US$64.01 million.

China sees extraordinary month-on-month increase:

Imports from China surged dramatically by 1747.65 percent in May, reaching US$410,122, though from a very low base in April. This suggests a potentially erratic or opportunistic import pattern from China.

Other notable month-on-month changes:

  • Indonesia saw a strong increase of 59.29 percent.
  • Ivory Coast imports grew by 49.54 percent.
  • Pakistan recorded a rise of 17.23 percent.
  • Conversely, Argentina experienced a sharp drop of 86.79 percent.
  • South Korea imports decreased by 55.47 percent.
  • Australia and India also saw slight declines of 5.99 percent and 4.04 percent, respectively.

The overall dip in May’s cotton imports suggests a slight softening in demand or adjustments in inventory, with continued reliance on the USA while other suppliers show more volatile month-on-month fluctuations.
