Cement, lime, and plaster production in Vietnam sees annual growth despite January decline

Vietnam’s production of cement, lime, and plaster increased by 112.0 percent in January compared to the 2019 baseline, according to Vietnam’s Industrial Production Index. However, this was a decline from December 2024, when output stood at 155.5 percent above 2019 levels.

Month-on-month, production fell by 17.5 percent in January compared to December. Despite this, the sector recorded a 3.9 percent year-on-year increase from January 2024, indicating steady annual growth.

Of note, Vietnam’s production of cement, lime, and plaster is a significant component of the country’s industrial sector, contributing to the growth of infrastructure, construction, and manufacturing. The country is one of the largest producers of cement in Southeast Asia and has seen steady growth in the production of lime and plaster products, which are essential for both domestic construction and export markets.

Cement production is the most prominent of the three, with Vietnam ranking among the top cement producers globally. The country’s cement industry has expanded rapidly due to the booming construction sector, driven by infrastructure development, urbanization, and industrial growth.

Lime production in Vietnam is also a key part of the manufacturing sector, with lime being used primarily in industries such as steel production, water treatment, and the production of chemicals and glass. The demand for lime in Vietnam has grown alongside the expansion of the steel and metallurgy industries, where it is used as a fluxing agent in the production of steel. Lime is also utilized in various environmental applications, including the treatment of wastewater and air pollution control.

Vietnam’s plaster production, although smaller compared to cement and lime, plays an important role in the construction and building materials sector. Plaster products are primarily used in interior applications, such as wall finishing and decorative elements. The demand for plaster has increased with the rise of urban housing and commercial real estate development, where it is used for plasterboard, ceiling tiles, and other construction finishes. The production of plaster in Vietnam is typically linked to the construction of residential buildings, commercial spaces, and large-scale infrastructure projects.

The Vietnamese government has played a significant role in supporting the cement, lime, and plaster industries. However, the sector faces challenges, including environmental concerns related to emissions and energy consumption, as well as competition from other regional producers. Efforts to reduce the environmental impact of cement production, such as by using alternative fuels and improving energy efficiency, are increasingly important to address these concerns.
