Vietnam mining industry news

Recent developments in Vietnam’s mining industry include:

Coal mining policy reform

Vietnam’s Ministry of Finance has proposed a special mechanism for the Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group (TKV) to resolve procurement barriers that currently hinder underground mine development.

Under existing rules, many technically capable TKV units cannot bid for tunnelling work because they share the same legal entity, even though domestic contractors outside TKV largely lack the capacity to perform these specialised tasks.

The draft decree would allow TKV to mobilise its in-house units directly, giving the group flexibility to allocate skilled labour, equipment and technology to maintain production schedules and safety standards.

NetZero + revised geology law

A Ho Chi Minh City National Assembly delegate has urged lawmakers to reduce reliance on mineral extraction and incorporate Vietnam’s 2050 NetZero commitment into the revised Law on Geology and Minerals, during a December 2 debate.

Delegate Nguyen Hoang Bao Tran said the draft law still focuses on licensing and enforcement but lacks provisions on cumulative environmental impacts, phased reduction of high-risk mining and development of alternative materials.

She said uncontrolled extraction has contributed to erosion, flooding and ecological damage.

Revised mining plans

The Government of Vietnam has approved adjustments to exploration, mining and processing plans for several tungsten, copper and bauxite deposits.

The decision covers the Nui Phao tungsten area in Thai Nguyen, the Ta Phoi copper mine in Lao Cai, and the Tho Son and Thong Nhat bauxite deposits in Dong Nai.

The adjustments revise project lists and boundary coordinates listed in earlier planning documents issued in 2023.

Vietnam’s aluminum industry

Vietnam’s aluminium industry has expanded rapidly, supported by strong domestic demand from construction, packaging, electronics and transport manufacturing.

The sector benefits from growing downstream fabrication capacity, including extrusion, rolling and aluminium products for export markets.

While Vietnam lacks large-scale primary aluminium smelting, it has developed a competitive position in processing and semi-finished products.

Industry growth is closely linked to foreign direct investment, renewable energy availability and policies aimed at strengthening domestic supply chains and value addition.
