Agriculture: Vietnam corn imports jump 16.13 percent in May

Vietnam’s imports of corn reached US$265.12 million in May 2025, according to figures released by Vietnam’s General Department of Customs. This represents a significant increase of 16.13 percent compared to April, bringing the year-to-date (YTD) import value to US$1.04 billion.

Argentina dominates the surge with over 115 percent growth:

Argentina was the leading supplier of corn in May, with imports valued at US$206.77 million. This marks a remarkable increase of 115.78 percent from April and accounts for a substantial 49.82 percent of the total year-to-date imports.

India sees massive month-on-month increase:

Imports from India experienced an extraordinary surge of 310.14 percent in May, reaching US$1.44 million, though from a low base.

Brazil’s imports plummet to zero after being a major supplier:

Notably, Brazil, which was a significant supplier in April, recorded no imports in May. This indicates a drastic shift in supply channels for corn to Vietnam.

Other suppliers show mixed performance:

  • Thailand saw a slight increase of 4.04 percent in May, reaching US$2.48 million.
  • Laos experienced a decrease of 12.53 percent, with imports falling to US$1.13 million.
  • The “Other” category, which was substantial in April, saw a sharp decline of 56.54 percent in May.

The overall increase in May’s corn imports is primarily driven by the massive surge from Argentina, while the absence of imports from Brazil highlights a dynamic and potentially shifting global supply landscape for Vietnam.
