African tourism to Vietnam dips in December but maintains strong annual growth

In December, Vietnam saw a slight decline in arrivals from Africa, with 3,891 visitors compared to 4,146 in November, marking a month-on-month decrease of 255 visitors or 6.15 percent, according to Vietnam’s General Department of Tourism. Despite this dip, arrivals reached 50,906 in 2024, representing a remarkable year-on-year growth of 69.1 percent.

African tourists visiting Vietnam are often drawn to the country’s historical and cultural landmarks, with destinations such as Hanoi’s Old Quarter, the ancient town of Hoi An, and the Cu Chi Tunnels being particularly popular. Beaches in Da Nang and Nha Trang also attract visitors seeking tropical retreats, while Vietnamese cuisine, especially street food, adds to the appeal.

Many African visitors, particularly from South Africa and Nigeria, travel for business as well as leisure, capitalising on Vietnam’s growing economic ties with Africa. These travellers often prefer centrally located hotels and guided tours that provide a seamless experience and insights into local culture.

The decline in December arrivals could be attributed to seasonal factors and travel constraints during the festive period. However, the robust annual growth reflects Vietnam’s growing reputation as an emerging destination for African tourists. Airlines like Ethiopian Airlines and Qatar Airways provide convenient connections, facilitating travel between the two regions.

With sustained marketing efforts and improved connectivity, Vietnam is likely to continue building its presence among African tourists, tapping into the region’s increasing outbound travel.
