Vietnam’s leather shoes and sandals production estimated to reach 367.3 million pairs in 2024

Vietnam’s leather shoes and sandals production for December 2024 is projected to be 34 million pairs, with an estimated total of 367.3 million pairs for the entire year, according to Vietnam’s General Office of Statistics. This reflects a year-on-year increase of 7.3 percent compared to 2023, highlighting continued growth in the footwear industry.

In November 2024, the country produced 34.2 million pairs of leather shoes and sandals, maintaining strong output despite a slight decrease in December.

Vietnam’s leather shoes and sandals production is a vital sector of the country’s manufacturing and export-driven economy. As one of the world’s largest footwear producers, Vietnam is a key supplier to global markets, second only to China in footwear exports. The industry produces a wide range of products, including leather shoes, sports shoes, sandals, and high-end fashion footwear, catering to both domestic consumption and international demand.

Foreign direct investment (FDI) has played a significant role in the sector’s development, with major global brands like Nike, Adidas, and Puma outsourcing a substantial portion of their production to Vietnam. These companies have established manufacturing facilities and partnerships with local suppliers, benefiting from Vietnam’s skilled labour force, competitive costs, and robust supply chain infrastructure. Key production hubs are located in provinces like Dong Nai, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City.

Despite its success, the sector faces challenges such as fluctuating raw material prices, increasing labour costs, and environmental concerns related to tanning and dyeing processes. To address these issues, the industry is focusing on sustainability by adopting eco-friendly materials and production practices, as well as investing in automation and technology to improve efficiency.

With its established global reputation, favourable trade agreements like the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA), and continued innovation, Vietnam’s leather shoes and sandals production is expected to maintain its strong position in global markets and drive further economic growth.
