Vietnam’s total electricity production and imports reached 22.24 billion kWh in February 2025, marking a 12.6 percent increase compared to the same month in 2024, according to a press release from Electricity Vietnam. The highest daily output was recorded at 876.9 million kWh, with peak capacity reaching 45,458 MW on February 27.
In the first two months of 2025, total electricity generation stood at 45.06 billion kWh. Main sources of electricity were:
- Hydropower: 9.29 billion kWh (20.6 percent)
- Coal-fired thermal power: 24.82 billion kWh (55.1 percent)
- Gas turbines: 2.7 billion kWh (6 percent)
- Renewable energy: 7.34 billion kWh (16.3 percent), including 4.07 billion kWh from solar and 3.04 billion kWh from wind
- Imported electricity: 863 million kWh (1.9 percent)
Electricity transmission in February was estimated at 17.44 billion kWh, up 12.1 percent year-on-year, bringing the cumulative total for the first two months of 2025 to 35.43 billion kWh. The increase in electricity production reflects rising demand and the continued reliance on coal-fired power, despite ongoing efforts to expand renewable energy capacity.
