Vietnam imported US$1.59 billion worth of goods from the United States in August 2025, down 4.4 percent from July’s US$1.67 billion, according to Vietnam’s General Department of Customs.
Year-to-date imports reached US$12.14 billion.
Computers, electrical products and spare parts remained the largest category at US$464.88 million, though this was down 12.7 percent from July.
Cotton imports fell 13.5 percent to US$121.02 million, and plastics slipped 12.5 percent to US$86.94 million.
Machinery imports, however, rose 7.4 percent to US$125.77 million, while animal fodders surged 30.2 percent to US$68.51 million.
Wood imports fell 13.9 percent to US$60.80 million, chemicals decreased 17.3 percent to US$36.04 million, and fruit and vegetable shipments plunged 41.1 percent to US$33.24 million.
Soy beans rose 17.1 percent to US$24.98 million, and wheat jumped sharply to US$21.16 million compared with US$1.83 million in July.
The United States remains one of Vietnam’s largest sources of imports, supplying a wide range of goods from high-tech products to agricultural commodities.
Vietnam–US trade has expanded rapidly over the past two decades, making the United States Vietnam’s largest export market and a key strategic economic partner.
Vietnam exports textiles, footwear, furniture, electronics, machinery, and seafood, while importing high-tech equipment, agricultural products, cotton, and aircraft.
The relationship has been shaped by strong supply chain integration, US consumer demand, and Vietnam’s role as a competitive manufacturing hub.
However, issues such as tariffs, trade imbalances, and regulatory differences have become key issues under the current US administration.
On trade imbalances, increasing the volume of imports from the US has been floated as one way to close the gap.
