Vietnam records win for R&D with new Motorola facility in HCMC

Motorola has opened a new research and development facility in Vietnam. The new centre is in Ho Chi Minh City and will work on ‘data analytics and AI-enabled technologies that help fuel the company’s safety and security ecosystem’, according to a press release from the firm.

Back in 2019, Vietnam issued Decree 13/2019/ND-CP, which was designed to drive investment in research and development. To do this, it offered tax breaks, preferential loans, and reductions in land and water fees.

That said, with the new Global Minimum Tax regulations it’s not clear how this might impact the provisions in Decree 13. The authorities, however, are currently working on new incentives broadly, to counteract diminished tax incentives as a result of the GMT and this is shaping up to squarely target bolstering research and development in Vietnam. It is, however, still in the draft phase.
