Vietnam’s cotton industry

Vietnam’s cotton industry is primarily import-dependent, supplying raw material to the country’s large textile and garment sector, one of the biggest in Southeast Asia.

Domestic cotton production remains limited due to land constraints and higher returns from alternative crops, making Vietnam reliant on major exporters such as the United States, Brazil, and India.

The sector is closely tied to global demand for apparel, with exports driven by key markets including the United States, the European Union, and Japan.

Rising sustainability requirements, shifting trade dynamics, and volatility in global cotton prices continue to shape sourcing strategies and cost structures across the industry.
