Vietnam’s coal imports in terms of volume fell by 26.18 percent, and in value by 35.65 percent in September over August, according to Vietnam’s General Department of Customs. Coal imports for the year, however, are still up by 32.2 percent in terms of value and 14.9 percent in terms of volume, year over year. In total, Vietnam has import 50 tons of coal for US$6.16 billion in 2024.

- Indonesia and Australia were the primary coal suppliers. Imports from Indonesia rose 21.79 percent in volume to 1,843,809 tons, with a value increase of 12.22 percent to US$150.73 million. However, imports from Australia sharply declined by 48.78 percent to 968,088 tons in September, with a value drop of 52.47 percent.
- Imports from Laos, China, and Russia also saw decreases in September. Laos supplied 75,244 tons, down 47.37 percent month-on-month, while China’s coal exports to Vietnam fell 45.55 percent to 6,206 tons. Russia’s coal exports to Vietnam remained stable, showing only a slight increase in volume by 1.54 percent.
