Tourism: Vietnam’s Asian arrivals fall sharply in April, but YTD growth signals recovery

Vietnam recorded 1.25 million tourist arrivals from Asia in April, marking a sharp 22.5 percent drop compared to March. Despite this decline, year-to-date (YTD) figures remain positive, with 4.71 million Asian arrivals, up 3.0 percent over the same period in 2024, according to the latest data from the General Department of Tourism.

Country highlights

  • China experienced the most significant MoM decline, falling 41.7 percent to 368,074 visitors in April. However, YTD arrivals reached 1.59 million, up 56.7 percent year-on-year, confirming China’s re-emergence as Vietnam’s top tourism market post-reopening.
  • South Korea arrivals fell 13.0 percent MoM, down to 326,140 in April. YTD figures totalled 1.26 million, though this was still 11.4 percent lower than the same period last year.
  • India saw a relatively moderate MoM drop of 14.8 percent, yet its 45.0 percent YTD growth (134,355 visitors) highlights India’s increasing importance as a growth market.
  • The Philippines recorded a steep 35.2 percent MoM fall, but still leads in YTD growth, with a 98.3 percent increase, totalling 96,254 arrivals.
  • Indonesia was the only country to post strong MoM growth in April, up 82.8 percent, bringing its YTD total to 48,286 — up 11.0 percent year-on-year.
  • Cambodia, Japan, and Laos all posted MoM declines above 30 percent. Notably, Cambodia and Laos still posted strong YTD growth (79.0 percent and 44.7 percent respectively), while Japan remained weak at –4.3 percent.
  • Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand had more stable MoM performance but remain minor contributors to Vietnam’s inbound figures.
