Tourism from Oceania rises in December, driven by Australian visitors

In December, Vietnam welcomed 55,574 tourists from Oceania, a month-on-month increase of 7,233 visitors, or 14.96 percent, according to Vietnam’s General Department of Tourism. Arrivals from the region in 2024 reached 540,197 in 2024, reflecting a strong year-on-year growth of 27.2 percent.

Visitors from Oceania, particularly from Australia and New Zealand, are drawn to Vietnam’s diverse attractions. Popular destinations include the bustling streets of Hanoi, the serene beaches of Da Nang and Phu Quoc, and cultural landmarks like Hoi An and Hue. Vietnamese cuisine, with its fresh and vibrant flavours, is also a major attraction, with many tourists enjoying culinary tours and cooking classes.

Oceania tourists often exhibit a preference for immersive experiences such as local homestays, cycling tours, and cultural festivals. They are also increasingly interested in eco-tourism and wellness retreats, which align with their growing focus on sustainable travel and relaxation.

Direct flights between major cities in Oceania and Vietnam, offered by airlines like Vietnam Airlines, Qantas, and Jetstar, have contributed to the rise in visitor numbers. Seasonal travel, particularly during the Southern Hemisphere’s summer months, also plays a significant role in the uptick of tourist arrivals.

The strong growth from Oceania highlights Vietnam’s increasing appeal as a long-haul destination. Continued efforts in promoting the country’s natural and cultural heritage are expected to further bolster tourism from this region.
