Paper & paper products: Vietnam exports dip 7.95% in May

Vietnam’s exports of paper and paper products reached US$179.02 million in May 2025, according to figures released by Vietnam’s General Department of Customs. This represents a decrease of 7.95 percent compared to April, bringing the year-to-date (YTD) export value to US$862.45 million.

Top Markets and Notable Increases:

  • The USA remained the largest market, despite a 9.38 percent decrease to US$74.21 million. It accounts for 35.89 percent of YTD exports.
  • Cambodia saw a strong increase of 17.74 percent to US$17.03 million.
  • Thailand exports jumped by 16.40 percent to US$12.70 million.
  • Indonesia recorded an impressive increase of 18.86 percent to US$9.66 million.
  • Myanmar exports grew by 14.58 percent.
  • Australia and Laos also showed positive growth.

Significant Declines:

  • China experienced a significant drop of 34.18 percent to US$9.55 million, though it remains a key YTD market.
  • The UAE saw the largest drop of 72.52 percent.
  • The UK exports plummeted by 34.57 percent.
  • South Korea decreased by 23.99 percent.
  • Malaysia exports fell by 22.25 percent.
  • Other notable declines were observed in the Philippines, Taiwan, Singapore, and Hong Kong.

The May data for Vietnam’s paper and paper products exports presents a mixed picture. While the overall category saw a notable decline, the robust growth in regional markets like Cambodia, Thailand, and Indonesia indicates potential for diversification and strengthening of trade within Southeast Asia. The significant drops in exports to China and the UAE suggest shifts in global demand or increased competition in those areas.
