Manufacturing: Vietnam non-wood furniture exports dip 3.33% in May

Vietnam’s exports of furniture made from materials other than wood reached US$293.07 million in May 2025, according to figures released by Vietnam’s General Department of Customs. This represents a slight decrease of 3.33 percent compared to April, bringing the year-to-date (YTD) export value to US$1.49 billion.

Australia, Taiwan, New Zealand, and Chile drive impressive growth:

While the overall category saw a slight decline, several specific markets experienced significant increases in May:

  • Taiwan recorded an impressive surge of 101.20 percent, more than doubling its imports from Vietnam.
  • New Zealand saw a strong increase of 89.59 percent.
  • Chile exports jumped by 55.92 percent.
  • Australia also demonstrated healthy growth of 33.38 percent.
  • The Philippines saw a notable increase of 20.56 percent.

Denmark, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Nordic countries face sharp declines:

Conversely, a number of markets experienced substantial decreases in May:

  • Indonesia saw the largest drop of 82.46 percent.
  • Malaysia exports plummeted by 37.01 percent.
  • Denmark decreased by 36.93 percent.
  • Hong Kong exports fell by 20.63 percent.
  • Peru showed a 100% decrease.
  • Brazil, Finland, and Norway also recorded 100% decreases for the month.

The May data for Vietnam’s furniture exports of other materials presents a mixed picture. The slight overall dip suggests some challenges, but the strong performance in specific markets like Taiwan, New Zealand, and Chile indicates diversifying demand and potential growth opportunities in these regions. The substantial drops in several other markets highlight the dynamic and sometimes volatile nature of international trade in this sector.
