Vietnam’s imports of chemicals reached US$671.33 million in May 2025, according to figures released by Vietnam’s General Department of Customs. This represents a decrease of 5.70 percent compared to April, bringing the year-to-date (YTD) import value to US$3.25 billion.
China remains the dominant supplier despite a minor dip:
China continued to be the primary source for chemical imports, with a May value of US$311.14 million. This signifies a minor decrease of 1.06 percent from April but still represents a dominant 44.18 percent of the total year-to-date imports.
USA shows significant growth to become a top supplier:
Imports from the USA surged by 100.32 percent in May, reaching US$50.09 million. This significant increase positioned the USA as a major supplier for the month and accounts for 6.04 percent of the YTD imports.
Other key Asian suppliers experience declines:
Imports from Taiwan decreased by 15.49 percent to US$50.21 million, while imports from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Thailand also saw substantial declines ranging from 20.73 percent to 36.81 percent. These countries remain important contributors to Vietnam’s chemical imports.
Notable increases from various markets:
Several countries exhibited significant month-on-month growth in May:
- Qatar recorded an extraordinary surge of 560.99 percent, albeit from a low base.
- UK imports jumped by 133.98 percent.
- Singapore saw a strong increase of 21.02 percent.
- Saudi Arabia and Indonesia both recorded increases of over 14 percent.
Significant decreases in imports:
Conversely, some markets faced substantial declines in imports in May:
- Switzerland saw the largest drop of 87.06 percent.
- Brazil imports decreased by 48.53 percent.
- France and Spain both experienced decreases of over 33 percent.
- Australia showed no imports in May after having imports in April.
The overall decrease in May’s chemical imports suggests a mixed market, with strong growth from certain suppliers like the USA and Qatar, offset by declines from traditional Asian partners.
