Energy: Vietnam crude oil imports plunge by 20.19 percent in May

Vietnam’s imports of crude oil amounted to US$557.12 million in May 2025, according to figures released by Vietnam’s General Department of Customs. This represents a significant decrease of 20.19 percent compared to April, bringing the year-to-date (YTD) import value to US$3.42 billion.

Kuwait remains the dominant supplier despite a notable decline:

Kuwait continued to be the primary source for crude oil imports, with a May value of US$424.72 million. This signifies a decrease of 27.02 percent from April but still represents a substantial 79.12 percent of the total year-to-date imports.

Nigeria sees a decrease in imports:

Imports from Nigeria also experienced a decline of 12.69 percent in May, falling to US$65.84 million. Nigeria accounts for 6.47 percent of the YTD imports.

Brunei Darussalam emerges as a new supplier:

Notably, Brunei Darussalam, which had no recorded imports in April, became a supplier in May with imports valued at US$49.97 million, accounting for 1.46 percent of the YTD total.

Other imports show significant increase:

The “Other” category saw a substantial increase of 63.54 percent in May, reaching US$66.56 million, indicating diversification or fluctuating smaller-scale imports from various sources.

The overall sharp decline in May’s crude oil imports suggests a reduced demand or strategic adjustments in Vietnam’s energy sector. While Kuwait remains the primary source, the emergence of new suppliers like Brunei Darussalam and the increase in ‘Other’ imports indicate a dynamic import landscape.
