Electronics: Vietnam phone imports plunge by 13.92 percent in May, China leads despite decline

Vietnam’s imports of telephones, mobile phones, and parts thereof reached US$746.79 million in May 2025, according to figures released by Vietnam’s General Department of Customs. This represents a significant decrease of 13.92 percent compared to April, bringing the year-to-date (YTD) import value to US$4.16 billion.

China dominates but sees a significant decline:

China remained the overwhelming primary source for these imports, with a May value of US$649.23 million. This signifies a substantial decrease of 17.05 percent from April, but China still accounts for a commanding 88.56 percent of the total year-to-date imports.

South Korea shows strong growth, while India plummets:

Imports from South Korea surged by 47.72 percent to US$28.23 million in May, indicating a diversifying supply or increased demand from this source. Conversely, India experienced a drastic decline of 88.01 percent, with imports falling to US$699,153.

Other notable changes:

  • The “Other” category saw a notable increase of 14.69 percent.
  • Taiwan’s imports increased by 8.41 percent.
  • Japan and UK saw decreases in imports.
  • USA and Hong Kong recorded no imports in May after having imports in April.

The overall sharp decline in May’s imports of telephones, mobile phones, and parts thereof suggests a significant reduction in demand or a shift in the supply chain for these products in Vietnam, with China’s dominant position being affected by this downturn.
