Electricity: Vietnam power mix in early 2025 dominated by coal despite renewable gains

Coal remained Vietnam’s dominant power source in the first four months of 2025, accounting for over 57 percent of total generation, according to new data from Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN).

Despite ongoing investment in renewables, hydropower and solar each contributed less than one-fifth, underscoring the country’s continued reliance on fossil fuels during the dry season.

  • Total electricity production and import: 26.85 billion kWh
  • Peak daily output: 974 million kWh (April 22)
  • Peak system capacity: 46,696 MW (April 21)
  • Year-to-date output (Jan–Apr): 98.98 billion kWh

Power source structure (Jan–Apr 2025)

  • Coal: 56.6 billion kWh (57.2%)
  • Hydropower: 18.5 billion kWh (18.7%)
  • Renewables: 15.2 billion kWh (15.3%)

    • Solar: 9.31 billion kWh
    • Wind: 5.37 billion kWh
  • Gas: 6.9 billion kWh (6.9%)
  • Imports: 1.72 billion kWh (1.7%)

Transmission

  • April 2025: 22.3 billion kWh
  • Year-to-date: 80.82 billion kWh
