Consumer goods: Vietnam glassware imports climb 2.80 percent in May

Vietnam’s imports of glass and glassware reached US$122.19 million in May 2025, according to figures released by Vietnam’s General Department of Customs. This represents an increase of 2.80 percent compared to April, bringing the year-to-date (YTD) import value to US$543.70 million.

China continues to overwhelmingly dominate the market:

China remained the primary source for glass and glassware imports, with a May value of US$81.49 million. This signifies a moderate increase of 3.34 percent from April and accounts for a substantial 66.68 percent of the total year-to-date imports.

Malaysia and Japan show strong growth:

Imports from Malaysia increased by 15.38 percent to US$11.65 million in May, while Japan’s imports grew by 26.57 percent to US$6.41 million. These countries are significant contributors to Vietnam’s glass and glassware imports.

Indonesia records a massive month-on-month surge:

Indonesia experienced an extraordinary surge of 174.11 percent in May, with imports reaching US$3.57 million, albeit from a lower base.

Other notable increases:

  • USA imports grew by 24.33 percent.

Significant decreases in imports:

Conversely, some markets faced substantial declines in imports in May:

  • Netherlands saw the largest drop of 70.15 percent.
  • Taiwan imports decreased by 42.71 percent.
  • Thailand imports fell by 31.74 percent.
  • Austria saw a decline of 19.02 percent.
  • South Korea imports decreased by 9.29 percent.

The overall increase in May’s glass and glassware imports suggests continued demand, with China’s dominant position remaining unchallenged, while other suppliers show dynamic shifts in their contributions.
