Coal: Vietnam exports surge 310.67 percent in April, Japan top destination

Vietnam’s exports of coal reached US$18.64 million in April 2025, according to figures released by Vietnam’s General Department of Customs. This represents an extraordinary increase of 310.67 percent compared to March, with a year-to-date (YTD) export value of US$46.09 million.

Japan emerges as the top export market with massive growth:

Japan became the leading export market in April, with exports valued at US$5.78 million, an astounding increase of 9462.66 percent from March. Japan now accounts for the largest share of the year-to-date exports at 27.40 percent.

Netherlands becomes a significant export market:

Netherlands became the second-largest export market in April with exports valued at US$4.88 million, a new development as there were no exports to the Netherlands in March. Netherlands accounts for 10.59 percent of the year-to-date exports.

Philippines becomes a major export market:

Philippines also became a significant export market in April with exports valued at US$4.13 million, another new development as there were no exports to the Philippines in March. Philippines accounts for 23.31 percent of the year-to-date exports.

Taiwan sees new exports in April:

Taiwan recorded US$0.39 million in exports in April, a new market as there were no exports in March. Taiwan accounts for 2.11 percent of the year-to-date exports.

Significant month-on-month increases and decreases:

Japan, Netherlands, Philippines, and Taiwan experienced massive increases as they were new or significantly increased export destinations in April. Conversely, there were decreases in exports to other smaller markets, with the overall trend being a substantial increase.
