Vietnam’s coal industry
Vietnam’s coal industry remains a core component of the country’s energy mix, supplying a large share of fuel for thermal power generation.
Domestic production is led by state-owned Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group, with output supplemented by imports as demand continues to outpace local supply.
Coal consumption has risen steadily alongside industrialisation and electricity demand, particularly from manufacturing and heavy industry.
Imports, mainly from Indonesia and Australia, now play a critical role in meeting shortfalls in both volume and coal quality.
