China’s Global Times has published an English-language editorial responding to outrage in Vietnam over a map on the website of milk tea outlet Chagee that includes China’s nine-dash-line. The editorial seems to suggest Vietnam is being overly sensitive but also asserts China’s ownership over most of the South China Sea.
A few points of note:
- This speaks to the importance of being aware of cultural sensitivities when entering a new market;
- Elucidates the sometimes testy relationship between China and Vietnam; and
- Suggests that China is willing to prioritise its territorial interests over its economic interests.
