Vietnam beer industry news

Pre-Tet beer consumption slow

Beer consumption ahead of the 2026 Tet holiday slowed despite the start of the peak selling period.

Retailers in Ho Chi Minh City said wholesale beer prices have risen, but demand remains weaker than in previous years.

Traders reported that overall Tet beer sales are down 30 to 40 percent year on year, with purchases mainly for year-end gatherings and offerings.

Distributors said online beer sales are about 30 percent higher than normal days, while many shops are reducing inventories.

Undocumented beer seizure

Vietnam market management authorities discovered 3,230 cartons of imported beer of unclear origin during an inspection at a storage site in Ho Chi Minh City on January 20.

The beer bore foreign language labels without Vietnamese labelling, lacked clear production and expiry dates, and showed no information identifying a lawful importer.

The cartons were priced at VND 215,000 each, with total listed value of about VND 694.45 million (US$26,366), according to authorities.

Officials classified the beer as food of unclear origin, seized the entire shipment, and transferred it to a state evidence warehouse pending further handling.

Vietnam’s beer industry

Vietnam’s beer industry is one of the largest in Southeast Asia, supported by high per capita consumption and a strong domestic market.

Production is dominated by mass market lagers, with local and foreign-owned brewers operating extensive nationwide distribution networks.

Demand growth slowed after the pandemic, as higher excise taxes, tighter drink-driving enforcement, and weaker consumer spending weighed on volumes.

Despite this, the industry remains profitable, with competition increasingly focused on pricing, branding, and premiumisation rather than capacity expansion.
