Agriculture, forestry and fisheries sector in Vietnam records US$4.53 million fall in January FDI

In January, Vietnam’s agriculture, forestry, and fisheries sector recorded a total foreign direct investment (FDI) of negative US$4.53 million, according to data from Vietnam’s Ministry of Planning and Investment. That said, this actually marks an improvement over December, which saw a total withdrawal of FDI of US$17.0 million in registered capital.

The sector accounted for -0.10 percent of total FDI in January, up from -0.25 percent in December.

Vietnam’s agriculture, forestry, and fisheries sector is a cornerstone of the country’s economy, employing a significant portion of the population and contributing to both domestic food security and export revenues. The agriculture sector is diverse, producing a wide range of crops, including rice, coffee, rubber, and fruits, with Vietnam being one of the world’s largest exporters of rice, coffee, and cashews.

The forestry industry is another important sector, with Vietnam being a major exporter of wood and wood products. The country has made strides in sustainable forestry management, promoting afforestation and reforestation efforts while addressing illegal logging and deforestation. In addition, the fisheries sector, particularly shrimp farming and fish production, plays a crucial role in exports, with Vietnam being one of the world’s top exporters of seafood, especially shrimp and pangasius (catfish). However, overfishing, environmental degradation, and disease outbreaks have posed challenges to sustainable growth in the fisheries sector.

Foreign direct investment (FDI) has supported growth in these industries, particularly in processing, technology, and infrastructure. The sector also faces challenges, including reliance on unpredictable weather patterns, the need for infrastructure development in rural areas, and the impact of global market fluctuations. Despite these challenges, the agriculture, forestry, and fisheries sectors remain central to Vietnam’s economic strategy, with continued efforts to enhance sustainability, improve market access, and diversify agricultural products. As the economy evolves, these sectors will continue to play a vital role in ensuring the country’s economic stability and long-term growth.
