ToggleVietnam’s consumer price index (CPI) rose by 0.20 percent in October 2025 compared with September, driven mainly by higher food prices in flood-affected areas and increased tuition fees at private schools, according to the latest data from the National Statistics Office (NSO).
CPI rose 2.82 percent from December 2024 and 3.25 percent year-on-year.
Average CPI for January–October 2025 was up 3.27 percent year-on-year, while core inflation increased 3.20 percent.
Price movements by category
Ten of eleven major groups recorded price increases. Only transport prices declined.
Food and beverage services rose 0.59 percent, adding 0.20 percentage points to overall CPI. Food prices climbed 0.69 percent and eating out increased 0.57 percent.
Education rose 0.51 percent, as several private and non-public schools adjusted tuition for the 2025–2026 academic year despite tuition relief for public schools under Decree 238/2025/ND-CP. Paper and stationery also rose modestly.
Other goods and services gained 0.43 percent, mainly due to a 9.82 percent jump in jewellery prices following world gold prices.
Household equipment and appliances increased 0.20 percent, reflecting higher production and labour costs, while garments, hats and footwear rose 0.18 percent on stronger seasonal demand.
Beverage and tobacco prices climbed 0.12 percent, and culture, entertainment and tourism gained 0.06 percent, led by higher hotel and ticket prices despite discounted tour packages.
Medicine and medical services edged up 0.04 percent, while post and telecommunications increased 0.03 percent due to higher smartphone prices.
Housing, electricity, water and construction materials inched up 0.01 percent, as building materials and rents rose, offset partly by declines in electricity (−1.74 percent), water (−0.17 percent) and gas (−1.62 percent).
Transport prices fell 0.81 percent, reducing overall CPI by 0.08 percentage points. Gasoline prices dropped 2.48 percent, diesel 0.35 percent, and airfares 5.46 percent.
Core inflation
Core inflation rose 0.35 percent month-on-month and 3.30 percent year-on-year in October.
For January–October 2025, core inflation averaged 3.20 percent—slightly below the overall CPI increase—because food, electricity, and certain service prices are excluded from the core inflation basket.
