ToggleVietnam imported wheat to the tune of US$289 million in April, up from US$288 million in March, a change of 0.15 percent, according to preliminary data from Vietnam’s General Department of Customs.
Year to date, Vietnam had imported US$1,019 million worth of wheat by the end of April.
Vietnam’s wheat industry
Vietnam relies heavily on imported wheat due to limited domestic production, with supply primarily sourced from major exporters such as Australia, Canada, and Brazil.
The commodity is a key input for the country’s flour milling industry, supporting demand from food processing sectors, including noodles, bread, and animal feed.
Import volumes and pricing are closely linked to global market conditions, freight costs, and currency movements, making the sector sensitive to external shocks.
Growth in processed food consumption and urbanisation continues to underpin demand, while suppliers compete on price, quality, and logistical reliability.
