Vietnam’s seafood export industry experienced a downturn in September 2024, with falls in exports of seafood products in all categories, according to Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers data.
Shrimp exports, one of Vietnam’s primary seafood products, fell by 7.83 percent to US$372 million in September, contributing to a year-to-date total of US$2.79 billion. Pangasius fish, another key export, dropped by 11.05 percent to US$169.46 million, bringing its cumulative total to US$1.46 billion for the year. Tuna exports also saw a notable reduction of 24.89 percent in September, with a monthly total of US$67.49 million and a YTD value of US$715.38 million.
The most significant drop, however, was observed in squid and octopus exports, which plummeted by 90.03 percent to US$58.78 million. Other seafood categories, including crab, shellfish, and other fish, also saw declines ranging from 5.69 percent to 38.66 percent.
Of note, Typhoon Yagi wreaked havoc on northern Vietnam in September and waylaid a large portion of Vietnam’s fishing industry for up to several weeks for some firms.
