Vietnam retail sales rise 7.9 percent in first two months 2026, Tet boosts consumption

Vietnam’s retail and consumer services sector expanded in the first two months of 2026 as spending increased around the Lunar New Year holiday. Total retail sales of goods and consumer service revenue rose 7.9 percent year-on-year, while February sales increased 8.5 percent compared with the same month in 2025, according to the latest release from the National Statistics Office.

Total retail sales and consumer service revenue in February were estimated at VND 613.7 trillion (US$23.3 billion), supported by stronger demand during the Tet holiday period. Clothing sales rose 14.3 percent year-on-year, household goods increased 9.6 percent, food and beverages rose 9.0 percent, accommodation and food services increased 9.7 percent, and tourism revenue climbed 13.8 percent.

For the first two months of 2026, total retail sales of goods and consumer services reached an estimated VND 1,236.6 trillion (US$46.9 billion). Growth slowed slightly compared with the same period in 2025, when retail sales increased 9.3 percent year-on-year.

Retail sales of goods accounted for the largest share at VND 945.3 trillion (US$35.9 billion), representing 76.4 percent of total retail activity and rising 7.8 percent year-on-year. Clothing sales increased 10.4 percent and household goods rose 8.6 percent as retailers promoted discounts during the holiday season.

Revenue from accommodation and food services reached VND 149.2 trillion (US$5.7 billion), accounting for 12.1 percent of total retail and service revenue and rising 9.1 percent compared with a year earlier. Tourism services generated VND 15 trillion (US$569 million), increasing 12.2 percent year-on-year as both domestic and international visitor numbers rose.

Other service activities generated VND 127.1 trillion (US$4.8 billion), accounting for 10.3 percent of the total and increasing 7.3 percent compared with the same period last year.

Among major cities, retail sales growth in the first two months was led by Hai Phong with an increase of 8.5 percent, followed by Da Nang with 7.9 percent, Can Tho with 7.8 percent, Hanoi with 7.7 percent, and Ho Chi Minh City with 7.6 percent. Tourism revenue grew fastest in Ca Mau at 23.2 percent and Quang Ninh at 21.3 percent during the period.
