Vietnam coffee exports to fall on smaller crops, higher local demand

Vietnamese farmers are cutting down coffee plants and growing durians and avocados instead, and this, alongside growing local demand for coffee, may see Vietnam’s coffee exports decline, according to Ha Nam, deputy chairman of the Vietnam Coffee Cocoa Association, Bloomberg is reporting.

Coffee is one of Vietnam’s biggest exports but it is also very popular in Vietnam which has its own unique coffee culture. A myriad of big coffee chains have established themselves in the burgeoning Southeast Asian nation–Starbucks for example has over 100 stores. That is not to say it is easy for foreign coffee chains to compete with homegrown coffee houses.
