Vietnam’s cashew exports increased 2.76 percent in August to US$473 million, bringing total shipments for the year to US$3.28 billion, according to Vietnam’s General Department of Customs.
China remained the largest buyer at US$79 million despite a 5.05 percent month-on-month fall, followed by the US with US$76 million, down 10.78 percent.
European markets showed mixed performance: the Netherlands grew 2.78 percent to US$53 million, while Germany slipped 8.23 percent to US$25 million.
The UK surged 37.50 percent to US$19 million, and the UAE nearly doubled to US$18 million.
Canada and Australia also rose more than 30 percent each. In contrast, Saudi Arabia dropped 32.64 percent, and France declined 24.66 percent.
Year-to-date, China and the US together account for roughly 40 percent of total exports, underscoring continued dependence on both markets.
Of note, Vietnam’s cashew nut processing industry is the largest in the world, accounting for a major share of global exports.
The country imports large volumes of raw cashew nuts from Africa and Cambodia for processing, then exports shelled kernels to markets such as the US, EU, China, and Australia.
Most cashew processors are located in southern provinces like Binh Phuoc, Dong Nai, and Ba Ria–Vung Tau, where clustering supports logistics and raw material handling.
While automation has increased productivity, the sector still faces challenges including fluctuating raw nut prices, dependency on imports, and rising labour costs.
Quality control, traceability, and compliance with international food safety standards are also key issues.
