Shrimp prices in Vietnam have been too low for too long and as a result shrimp farmers are growing rice instead, Tuoi Tre is reporting.
Not in the article but of note, Vietnamese shrimp is currently under an antidumping investigation by the US Department of Commerce. US shrimp farmers are essentially arguing Vietnam shrimp prices are being kept artificially low. In this context, with farmers in both the US and Vietnam saying prices are too low, it seems they probably are. It also seems clear that any subsidies or support mechanisms in place to boost shrimp exports are not benefitting Vietnam’s shrimp farmers but rather middle persons, that is if anyone is benefitting at all.
