The first phase of Phuoc An seaport, the largest seaport in Dong Nai Province, is scheduled to start operating in September 2024, according to Dantri. The project has cost an estimated US$833.33 million and has taken almost 15 years to complete.
Approved for construction in 2009, the project was almost at a standstill for 10 years due to difficulties securing site clearance.
Of note, Phuoc An seaport is much smaller than other close by seaports. For example, Gemalink seaport in Cai Mep is the country’s largest deep-water seaport, and can receive the world’s largest container ships with a capacity of up to 250,000 DWT. Phuoc An seaport, on the other hand, can only serve cargo vessels with a carrying capacity of 60,000 DWT.
With this in mind, whereas the launch of the new seaport is a positive outcome, the reality is that it may be in need of an upgrade already.
