National Geographic taken off the air in Vietnam

The National Geographic channel, as well as Nat Geo Wild, and Baby TV, have stopped broadcasting in Vietnam, VN Express is reporting. These channels were available via cable TV company MSky.

Why it matters: This is inline with Disney pulling its channels from a number of regional markets on a bid to, what looks like, push viewers onto its Disney Plus streaming platform. Disney Plus, however, is not currently available in Vientam at the moment and should the conglomerate look to enter the market it may be somewhat challenging. A slew of new laws and regulations have been passed in recent years in a move by the Vietnamese government to exert greater control over media content. Disney would have to open a local office, for one, and store user data on servers inside Vietnam. Other major streaming firms, Netflix for example, have so far avoided this, but notably, it is more challenging to enforce new laws on companies already operating in the country than new firms entering the market.
