Manufacturing: Vietnam’s textile and garment exports ease 1.28 percent in August 2025

Vietnam exported US$3.86 billion worth of textiles and garments in August 2025, down 1.28 percent from July, according to Vietnam’s General Department of Customs.

Year-to-date exports reached US$26.47 billion, making the sector one of Vietnam’s leading export earners.

The United States remained the largest market, with shipments of US$1.78 billion in August and US$12.07 billion year-to-date, accounting for 45.6 percent of total exports.

Japan followed with US$436 million, while South Korea surged 40.6 percent month-on-month to US$364 million.

China contributed US$180 million, while Canada and the Netherlands added US$124 million and US$109 million respectively.

European markets showed mixed performance: exports to the UK and Germany fell 15.3 percent and 22.7 percent respectively, while Spain inched up 1.7 percent.

Australia rose 13 percent, while France slipped nearly 15 percent.

Among smaller destinations, Cambodia and Hong Kong recorded declines, while Bangladesh and Taiwan posted strong increases.

African markets such as Kenya and Nigeria recorded triple-digit growth, though from a low base.

Vietnam’s garment and textile manufacturing industry is one of its largest export earners and a key pillar of the economy.

The sector produces apparel, fabrics, yarn, and accessories for major global brands, with strong markets in the US, EU, Japan, and South Korea.

Competitive labour costs, preferential market access through trade agreements such as the CPTPP and EVFTA, and a large skilled workforce have made Vietnam a top global sourcing destination.

However, the industry remains reliant on imported raw materials, particularly from China, for fabrics, dyes, and accessories.

Environmental pressures, rising wages, and demands for sustainable production are reshaping operations, with increasing investment in greener technologies and domestic fabric production.

Despite these challenges, the sector continues to expand and is central to Vietnam’s role in global supply chains.
