Hard slog likely for VN to become a permanent fixture on world live music scene

Tuoi Tre is carrying this analysis of BlackPink’s concert in Hanoi in July and what it might mean for the domestic live music scene. Overall the tone is somewhat optimistic but also realistic–there is a long way to go for Vietnam to become a key stopover in Southeast Asia.

For context: There are very few live concerts in Vietnam, particularly with regard to big foreign names, so when BlackPink announced they would perform in Hanoi it created a lot of buzz. The local press reported on the positive impacts this would have on Hanoi’s economy, with special attention paid to the tourism and hospitality sector. This has led to an ongoing debate around how to coax more entertainers to visit the burgeoning Southeast Asian nation. A big problem is, however, strict censorship laws that are accompanied with mounds of red tape. There are also limited big venues and the lack of live concerts also means there is a lack of technical experience as well.
