Vietnam’s total electricity output for the month of May was 28.6 billion kWh, with the system reaching a peak capacity of 49,759 MW, according to a press release from state power providers Electricity Vietnam.
Notably, coal remains the key power source accounting for 56.8 percent of power generated.
Key details:
- May generation: 28.6 billion kWh; peak day output 1.041 billion kWh
- January–May total: 127.6 billion kWh
- Generation mix:
- Coal: 72.4 billion kWh (56.8%)
- Hydropower: 25.7 billion kWh (20.1%)
- Renewables: 18.2 billion kWh (14.3%), including 11.77 billion from solar and 5.85 billion from wind
- Gas turbines: 8.7 billion kWh (6.8%)
- Imports: 2.3 billion kWh (1.8%)
- Coal: 72.4 billion kWh (56.8%)
- Transmission: 22.9 billion kWh in May; 101.73 billion kWh year-to-date
Vietnam’s May 2025 electricity data highlights a continued reliance on coal, which accounted for 56.8 percent of total generation, while renewable sources like solar and wind made up just 14.3 percent.
Despite having a large installed capacity for renewables, infrastructure constraints such as limited grid connectivity and curtailment have prevented their full utilisation.
Hydropower contributed 20.1 percent, but low reservoir levels have raised concerns over its reliability heading into peak demand season.
