Vietnam pushes US to remove non-market economy designation

During the US President’s visit to Hanoi, the Chairman of the National Assembly, Vuong Dinh Hue, requested the US revisit its designation of Vietnam as a non-market economy, VN Economy is reporting

For context: When assessing anti-dumping disputes with non-market economies, the US Commerce Department, per WTO rules, often uses surrogate countries to determine the fair market value of the goods in question. Usually it’s a comparable market-economy (Indonesia, for example) but this is not always the case and, as a result, this process is not always fair for non-market economies.

As of the end of 2021, the US had reported 17 antidumping measures applied to goods from Vietnam according to the WTO Trade Remedies Data Portal.
