Automotive: Vietnam motor vehicle imports down 15.3 percent in August, China and Thailand top suppliers

Vietnam imported US$363.35 million of motor vehicles in August, a 15.3 percent decline from July, according to Vietnam’s General Department of Customs. Year-to-date imports reached US$3.02 billion.

China was the largest supplier with US$106.44 million, down 25.6 percent month-on-month, followed closely by Thailand at US$113.47 million, a 22.0 percent drop.

Indonesia stood out with stable growth, shipping US$91.50 million, up 1.1 percent.

Japan’s shipments fell sharply by 38.1 percent, while Russia posted a surge to US$11.76 million from a low base.

Imports remain concentrated in China, Thailand, and Indonesia, which together accounted for nearly 90 percent of Vietnam’s motor vehicle imports in 2025 to date.
