DPPA hurdles

VnExpress is reporting that businesses have said uptake of direct power purchase agreements (DPPAs) and rooftop solar projects is being delayed by licensing requirements and inconsistent local interpretation of requirements.

The article notes that Deputy Director of the Electricity Authority Trinh Quoc Vu has said the Ministry of Industry and Trade is reviewing the relevant decrees and plans to address these issues. View source→

Canada-Taiwan renewables investment in VN

The Taipei Times is reporting that Hon Hai Precision Industry from Taiwan and Canada’s Brookfield Asset Management have announced a partnership to invest in renewable energy projects in Vietnam to support Hon Hai’s operations and suppliers.

Progress report on US aircraft / engine deals requested

Reuters is reporting that Vietnamese airlines have been asked to report on their progress in implementing aircraft and engine deals previously announced with US companies, as Hanoi seeks to demonstrate progress on bilateral trade commitments during talks with Washington.

Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet Air and Sun Phu Quoc Airways were asked to review agreements, including purchases of 290 Boeing aircraft and Vietjet’s Pratt & Whitney engine contract. View source→

Ed.’s notes: Not a great time for airlines (re: rising fuel prices) to be expanding / taking on more debt. Will be interesting to see if government objectives can win out over business environment realities / if there might be government support made available to help finance these projects.

Tech development plan

The Investor is reporting that a plan targeting five Vietnamese digital technology companies generating at least US$1 billion in annual overseas revenue by 2030 has been approved.

The strategy aims for at least 5,000 Vietnamese digital technology firms to earn revenue abroad and for annual digital technology exports to reach at least US$55 billion. View source→

Ed.’s notes: Very ambitious. Not clear how these targets were determined / what supporting policy there might be to make this happen.

VinHomes subsidiary bond issuance

The Investor is reporting that Vinhomes subsidiary Thai Son Investment Construction Corporation raised VND8 trillion (US$304 million) through four private bond issuances in May and June, including VND2 trillion (US$75.9 million) this month.

The latest three-year bond tranche carries a 12 percent coupon and is secured by 22 million Vingroup shares valued at about VND4.7 trillion (US$178.4 million). View source→

Ed.’s notes: Note the value of the shares as security = VND 213,636. About 10 times their book value (roughly VND 20,000 per share).

BIDV reverses course on interest rate hike

Vietnamnet is reporting that BIDV reversed interest rate increases introduced earlier this month, cutting online deposit rates and restoring them to previous levels.

BIDV reduced online rates by 0.6 percentage points for six to 11-month deposits and by 0.8 percentage points for 12-month deposits. View source→

Ed.’s notes: It would be interesting to know what went on behind the scenes. Presumably, BIDV was raising interest rates to increase liquidity. Where is that liquidity coming from now?

Fines for supernatural fake news
