Vietnam e-wallet legislation will not apply to cryptocurrencies

The State Bank has clarified a new decree that was issued to clarify what is and is not considered electronic money. Specifically, the bank has said that the absence of a mention of cryptocurrency in the new decree means that it is in fact not regulated as opposed to media reports earlier this week that it was.

This means that cryptocurrencies stored in digital wallets will continue to be unregulated. In this context, it is not clear what the purpose of this decree is with few benefits to keeping cash in digital wallets when direct and instant transfers between banks via QR codes are so prolific.

There is no mention of digital assets in the decree.
